The township contains the village of Kalkaska, which serves as the county seat.

There were 2,220 housing units at an average density of 31.6 per square mile (12.2/km2).

There were 1,854 households, of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families.

26.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
