Kilmaurs Tolbooth

[1] The original tolbooth was a single-storey building at the corner of Irvine Road and Main Street which may have dated back to the 16th century.

[2] The current building, on the east side of Main Street, was designed in the Scottish medieval style, built in painted stone and was completed in around 1709.

[1] Internally, the principal room was the council chamber on the first floor, which had a bench and a dock, and it once featured a fireplace.

[2] After the jougs (a form of neck shackle) had been withdrawn from use in 1820, they were attached to the south wall of the building to act as a warning to others.

[10] An extensive programme of external restoration works, which included repairs to the cement render, was carried out by a local stonemason in 2018.
