[1][2] The lagoon is bounded to the north by the Jasmund peninsula, to the east by the spit of the Schmale Heide and to the south by the main body of the island of Rügen, the Muttland.
[1] The water of the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden contains very little salt because it has no direct link to the Baltic Sea.
Its water quality is poor, however, due to discharges from the sewage works at Bergen and eutrophication is well advanced.
[4] By the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden is a 9.8 kilometre long circular walk that starts at Lietzow.
[5] The bodden has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports large numbers of wintering waterfowl as well as breeding sandwich terns and white-tailed sea-eagles.
