The administrative centre was located in the village of Heimdal, just west of the border with Tiller Municipality.
[10] The municipality (originally the parish) is named Leinstrand (Old Norse: Leinastrǫnd).
On 3 November 1917, a royal resolution changed the spelling of the name of the municipality to Leinstrand, removing the definite form ending -en.
At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Melhus prestegjeld and the Heimdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros.
[8] The municipality was located at the eastern end of the Gaulosen fjord, just south of the city of Trondheim.
The municipal council (Herredsstyre) of Leinstrand was made up of 21 representatives that were elected to four year terms.
