After studies in New York City and Paris, he toured in the U.S. for two years with Frank Damrosch's opera troupe and with Nellie Melba.

When the United States entered the World War in 1917, he returned home, where he worked in concert and as a voice teacher.

[1] Rains studied at the National Conservatory in New York in 1890, which he left as a prize student, a pupil of Oscar Saenger.

He made his operatic debut in 1897 with Frank Damrosch's troupe, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and touring the U.S. to 1899.

[4] In Dresden, he took part in several world premieres, including Salome by Richard Strauss,[1] and gave guest performances in Berlin, Vienna, Prague and at the Oper Frankfurt, among others.
