Sarajevo has had 39 different mayors in 40 different mayorships since the position was created on 22 August 1878, upon Austro-Hungarian occupation.
[2] The first non-Muslim mayor was Aristotel Petrović, who served from 1918 until 1920.
[4] Fehim Čurčić, the city's fifth mayor, served during World War I.
In 1941, Atih Hadžikadić was elected mayor, a position that was short-lived as he was hanged during World War II in August 1941.
The current, 40th mayor of the city is Predrag Puharić, serving since 29 November 2024.
