World War I: Battle of the Dogger Bank: The armoured cruiser was shelled and sunk in the North Sea by HMS Indomitable, HMS Lion, New Zealand, HMS Princess Royal and HMS Tiger (all  Royal Navy) with the loss of at least 747 of her 1,200-plus crew.

World War I: The ship was sunk in the Irish Sea by SM U-21 ( Imperial German Navy).All crew survived[44]
