Originally an outlying suburb, it became part of Hamilton City in 1925 with the second boundary extension.

The percentage of people born overseas was 19.7, compared with 27.1% nationally.

Although some people chose not to answer the census's question about religious affiliation, 48.9% had no religion, 33.9% were Christian, 1.5% had Māori religious beliefs, 3.1% were Hindu, 1.9% were Muslim, 0.5% were Buddhist and 3.5% had other religions.

The school coat of arms is registered with the College of Arms and includes arrows of desire, spear or sword of justice, lamp of knowledge and crosses.

That same year, the school hosted the Newscruise Challenge, an annual interschool news and general knowledge quiz sponsored by the Waikato Times.
