The district had a population of 771,545 (1999 census) and an area of 7,966 km2.
[2] It was later split into four smaller districts of Makueni, Mbooni, Kibwezi and Nzaui.
[3] In 2010, after the promulgation of the new constitution of Kenya, counties were to be created based on the districts of Kenya as at 1992.
This effectively led to the creation of Makueni County.
