It was named by settlers after Malung, a town in central Sweden.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 427 people, 153 households, and 128 families residing in the township.
There were 162 housing units at an average density of 4.5 per square mile (1.7/km2).
14.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
