Nkhula A Hydroelectric Power Station

[1] The power was developed in stages, with the first phase involving the installation of three 8 megawatts-generating turbines.

Phase I of the power station was officially opened in 1966.

[2] In April 2017, the Electricity Generation Company Malawi Limited (Egenco), began the first major overhaul of the power station since its inception, over 50 years earlier.

[3] The power station is located across the Shire River, in Chikwawa District, in the Southern Region of Malawi, approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi), by road, north-west of Blantyre, the financial capital and largest city in the country.

[5] Nkhula A was the first major hydroelectric power station built in Malawi.
