It is located in the Northern Ostrobothnia region, 101 kilometres (63 mi) south of the city of Oulu.
In addition to the town center, the municipality includes the villages of Kilpua, Lehtopää, Matkaniva, Petäjäskoski, Piipsjärvi and Honkaranta.
