Portrait of Sir John Moore

[1] Moore joined the army in 1776 during the American War of Independence and served in multiple subsequent campaigns.

[2] In 1808 he commanded British forces in Spain during the early stages of the Peninsular War.

Now a popular hero in Britain, his image was widely circulated and an engraving was made of Lawrence's work by Charles Turner.

Arthur Wellesley succeeded Moore as commander of the British Army in the Iberian Peninsular.

The painting is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London having been donated by Moore's great-grandniece in 1898.
