The station is 37+3⁄4 miles (60.8 km) south west of Glasgow Central, on the Ayrshire Coast Line.

It is currently the only railway station in Scotland that is directly connected to an airport.

It is also the only railway station in Scotland not managed by ScotRail or Network Rail.
