Pseudotriacanthus is a monospecific genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Triacanthidae, the triplespines or tripodfishes.
Pseudotriacanthus was first proposed as a monotypic genus in 1941 by the British ichthyologist Alec Fraser-Brunner with Triacanthus strigilifer designated as its type species.
[2] T. strigilifer was first formally described in 1849 by the Danish physician and biologist Theodore Cantor, with its type locality given as the Sea of Penang off Peninsular Malaysia.
In 1843, Henri Hollard described this species as Monacanthus longirostris, predating Cantor's name, but this name fell into disuse and is a nomen oblitum.
The specific name strigilifer, which means "scraper bearer", the scales of this species were said to resemble small currycombs, and make the skin rough to the touch in every direction.
