Renu Dahal was born on July 4, 1976, in Bhimsen Nagar of Shivanagar VDC (now Bharatpur Metropolis) in Chitwan District.

She secured the mayoral post by defeating her closet rival of Communist Party of Nepal (UML), Devi Gyawali.
