Rippon Tor Rifle Range

The range is situated southeast of the 473 m high Rippon Tor, near the village Widecombe-in-the-Moor, and close to the road between Halshanger and Cold East Cross.

[5] The committee was formed in 1971 to consider military landholdings in respect of training requirements and the public animosity surrounding the use of sites in areas like Dartmoor.

[6] Although some called for the range's demolition after its closure, including the Dartmoor Preservation Association, the landowner decided to retain it as a piece of wartime archaeology.

The back stop (the receiving end) is infilled with earth, gravel and sand to form a sloping bank southwards.

[2] To the south-west, at the entrance to the range site, is the former concrete troop shelter, toilet block, possible vehicle park and service road.
