Grierson was born in Cambusbarron, Stirlingshire, to Jane Anthony, a teacher from Ayrshire, a Labour Party activist who frequently took the chair at Tom Johnston's election meetings and a suffragette, and schoolmaster Robert Morrison Grierson from Boddam, near Peterhead.
