The Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation (Russian: Министерство спорта Российской Федерации, romanized: Ministerstvo sporta Rossiyskoy Federatsii), often abbreviated as Minsport (Минспорт), is a ministry of the Government of Russia responsible for sports.
The Ministry is composed of two branches: The State Committee for Sports and Physical Education of the USSR (Russian: Комитет по физической культуре и спорту при Совете Министров СССР, romanized: Komitet po fizicheskoy kulture i sportu pri Sovete Ministrov SSSR), abbreviated as Sportkomitet SSSR (Russian: Спорткомитет СССР), was established in 1954 as the only governmental body responsible for the management of sports in the Soviet Union.
[citation needed] The State Committee for Sports and Physical Education of Russia (Russian: Государственный комитет Российской Федерации по физической культуре и спорту, romanized: Gosudarstvenny komitet Rossiyskoy Federatsii po fizicheskoy kulture i sportu), abbreviated as Goskomitet po FkiT (Russian: Госкомитет по ФКиТ) or Goskomsport Rossii (Russian: Госкомспорт России) was created in 1991.
[citation needed] The Federal Agency for Sports and Body Culture (Russian: Федеральное агентство по физической культуре и спорту, romanized: Federalnoye agentstvo po fizicheskoy kulture i sportu) was created in 2002 as the successor to the previous sports committee.
