It is located primarily in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy.

Its source is located near Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise and Scanno.

The Sagittario flows north through the Appennino Abruzzese near Villalago, Bugnara, Sulmona and Pratola Peligna.
