It was located at the northern end of the Sandeidfjorden in what is now part of the municipality of Vindafjord.

On 1 January 1965 Sandeid municipality was dissolved based on recommendations from the Schei Committee.

The first element is the plural genitive case of the word sandr which means "sand".

The mayor was indirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council.

[6] The municipal council (Herredsstyre) of Sandeid was made up of 13 representatives that were elected to four year terms.
