On the other hand, Anwari Begum, Jugal Kishore Mehra's wife starred in the first ever Heer Ranjha (based on an Indian folktale similar to Romeo and Juliet).
It was therefore only natural for Zahrah's grandmother Nasreen Mehra, to make her debut with the director Abdur Rashid Kardar in the film Shahjehan opposite actor K. L. Saigal.
Zahrah's mother, Salma Agha, made her debut as an actress and singer with B. R. Chopra in Nikaah which went on to become a box office hit and ran in a theatre for five years continuously, earning her a Filmfare Award for Best Singer.
