The Coastal Line was originally designed across the Galle Face Green, but due to requests by the public to avoid the promenade, an alternate route was made through Slave Island.
The station displays stylish arches, intricate woodwork and metal installations, and the signature Victorian mixing of iron and stone.
[3] The station is now a historic building that receives preservation support by the John Keells Foundation.
[3] Part of the work also involves the ambience of the station building; lights, paint, and paving are being improved for a better environment for commuters.
[4] Located in the Company Roads area, just east of the Galle Face Green, the station sits in a commercial locale with business establishments, hotels, and shopping centers.
