It is a part of the municipality of Terneuzen, and lies about 27 km southeast of Vlissingen.
The village was first mentioned in 1839 as Sluiskil, and means "exit canal of the sluice".
The village is located on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal where there used to be a trench to the Axelse Gat [nl].
[4] In 2015, the Sluiskiltunnel [nl] opened as a replacement of the bridge over the canal.
The bridge averaged 23 opening a day and used to cause large traffic jams.
