In 1839, Miles Stapleton inherited the property, and decided to commission a Catholic chapel in the nearby village of Carlton.
It was designed by M. E. Hadfield, and construction started in June 1841, with the first service in the new church taking place on 31 August 1842.
The church was restored by Weightman & Brown in the 1980s, while the east end was reordered in 1992, with new sanctuary furniture installed.
[2] The church is built of white brick with stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs.
[2][3] Inside the church are the original pews, and three chancel chairs made by Robert Thompson.
