Staatsmijn Maurits

Staatsmijn Maurits was a state-owned coal mine in Geleen, Netherlands.

Drillings were made at the towns of Geleen-Lutterade, Krawinkel and Schinnen.

In 1916 it was decided to name this 4th State Mine "Maurits", after 17th century stadtholder Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange.

Directly adjacent to the mine site, DSM had already decades before started with cokes production and gasproduction.

The "Stikstof Bindingsbedrijf" (SBB - or "nitrogen bonding plant") became the locus for the next step in the history of DSM: it became (and still is) a large chemicals company.
