He went on and found the marvellous castle where the Green Knight, a handsome young man lived.

The tale is classified in the international Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index as type ATU 432, "The Prince as Bird".

[7] In an article in Enzyklopädie des Märchens, folklorist Christine Goldberg noted the many objects the heroine asks her father in variants of the tale type.

However, in Danish and Norwegian variants, the heroine asks her father to greet the "Green Knight".

[8] Also, according to Swedish scholar Waldemar Liungmann [sv], in "Northern" variants of tale type ATU 432, the bird lover is referred to as a "Green Knight".
