The Letter Writer of Seville is an 1854 genre painting by the British artist John Phillip.
The Scottish painter Phillip settled in London where he was a member of The Clique artistic group.
After several visits to Andalucía from 1851 onwards he switched from depictions of Scottish rural life to Spanish scenes.
[1] Set in Seville, where illiteracy remained high, it shows a professional letter writer taking dictation from a young woman dressed in a mantilla.
It was acquired by Prince Albert on behalf of Queen Victoria and was hung in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.
