[2] Prior to her arrest, she was a human-rights activist and lawyer, the former executive director of the Centre for Social Development, and president of the Center for Cambodian Civic Education (CIVICUS Cambodia).
Her support of the CNRP and the return of its exiled leader, Sam Rainsy, led to the charges of “conspiracy to commit treason” and “incitement to create gross chaos impacting public security,” [4][5] In June 2022, in a mass trial, Theary Seng, along with 60 opposition supporters, was sentenced to six years in prison on treason charges, prompting condemnation from rights groups and the U.S.
[7] A few day after being imprisoned in Phnom Penh, she was transferred to a remote prison known for its terrible conditions in Preah Vihear where she shares a 16-by-16-foot cell with 19 other women and has been blocked from attending church services and making phone calls.
[8][6] In July 2023, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention stated “no trial of Ms. Seng should have taken place” and that she was “targeted because of her activities as a human rights defender who disseminated posts and information that were critical of the Government” and called for her immediate release.
