Thierstein District contains twelve municipalities, with Kleinlützel existing as an exclave.
Thierstein has an area, as of 2009[update], of 102.16 square kilometers (39.44 sq mi).
Of the rest of the land, 7.04 km2 (2.72 sq mi) or 6.9% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.15 km2 (37 acres) or 0.1% is either rivers or lakes and 0.2 km2 (0.077 sq mi) or 0.2% is unproductive land.
