Thiruppunavayil

Traditional The Thiruppunavayil Shiva temple [1] is located on the seashore in Thiruppunavasal near Pudukkotai in Tamil nadu.

This temple is regarded as the 7th of the Tevara Stalams in the Pandya region of Tamil Nadu.

[2] Thiruppunavayil has it that the 4 Vedas, Bhrama, Lakshmi and Mahavishnu along with Indra, Surya, Chandra, Yama, Airavatam, Vasishta and Agasthyar worshipped Shiva here.

The temple covers an area of about 3 acres (12,000 m2) with a 65 feet rajagopurum at the entrance, and much of the structure dates back to the Pandyan period.

The Shiva lingam in the sanctum sanatorium is installed on a big Avudayar (the base or the seat for placing the deity).

Devotees present a specially made 90 feet cloth for the deity here to adorn the Lingam.
