From 1968 to 1971 he conducted an apprenticeship as a laboratory technician in Schaan, and from 1975 1984 he studied chemistry in Zurich.
From 1985 to 1993 he was head of the scientific department at Ivoclar in Schaan and he was a lecturer at the Liechtenstein engineering school from 1986 to 1992.
He resigned from the Landtag when he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister of Liechtenstein on 15 December 1993, under the government of Mario Frick.
