The Danish participating broadcaster, Danmarks Radio (DR), organised the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2006 in order to select its entry for the contest.
Ten songs competed in a televised show where "Twist of Love" performed by Sidsel Ben Semmane was the winner as decided upon through two rounds of public voting.
As one of the ten highest placed finishers in 2005, Denmark automatically qualified to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Along with its participation confirmation, the broadcaster announced that Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2006 would be organised in order to select its entry for the 2006 contest.
[13] According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country, the "Big Four" (France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom) and the ten highest placed finishers in the 2005 contest are required to qualify from the semi-final in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from the semi-final progress to the final.
As one of the ten highest placed finishers in the 2005 contest, Denmark automatically qualified to compete in the final on 20 May 2006.
DR appointed Jørgen de Mylius as its spokesperson to announce the Danish votes during the final.
