It was founded in 1643 by the Franconian Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn and is deeply rooted in the region of Lower Franconia.

As of 2011 it exports to buyers of brewery products in the United States, Italy and China.
Since 1993, the brewery was technically modernized and expanded in subsequent years through strategic acquisitions.
Since 2005, the Würzburg Hofbräuhaus GmbH is owned by the Kulmbacher Brewery, a subsidiary of Brau Holding International.
