Born in St. George in the Utah Territory, Granger moved with his parents to Cedar City, in 1894.
[1] He attended the public schools and graduated from Branch Agricultural College at Cedar City, Utah in 1909.
During this time he served overseas as a sergeant in the Eleventh Regiment of the United States Marine Corps from 1918 to 1919, which saw no combat in the waning days of World War I.
After his political life he resumed his farming interests and from 1967 to 1970 served as member of the Board of Appeals of the United States Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture.
