The locality is about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south-west of the town of Launceston.

The 2016 census recorded a population of 4212 for the state suburb of West Launceston.

[1] The suburb is part of the Launceston CBD and is also near Cataract Gorge.

Approximately 7% of employees work in hospitals, with restaurants and education also being significant employers.

[2] The South Esk River forms the north-western boundary.
