It opened on 6 February 1899 as a replacement for the original Toodyay Valley government school, which had been closed on 23 October 1898.
A simple building, timber framed and clad with galvanised iron, it contained one room measuring 35 by 20 feet (10.7 m × 6.1 m) and had several windows and a door.
Tenders were called for the addition of a screened verandah in April 1912, most probably as an attempt to circumvent the problem of flies at various times of the year.
Thereafter, approximately twenty-five pupils were transported in a horse-drawn wagon to the Toodyay (formerly Newcastle) township upstream.
Later, in 1929, material derived from the original school building was used in the construction of a shearing shed at Woodendale, Nunyle.
