Although the station is on the Sakurai Line as rail infrastructure, it has been served by the Man-yō Mahoroba Line since 2010 in terms of passenger train services.
The line was transferrer to the Kansai Railway on 7 February 1905, which was subsequently nationalized on 1 October 1907.
With the privatization of the Japan National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station was transferred to JR West.
The station building was transferred to the city of Tenri in 2019, and was remodeled to include a cafe and retail spaces.
