There are also a number of unincorporated resort communities along the shores of Lake Huron: According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 38.8 square miles (100 km2), of which 38.8 square miles (100 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.05%) is water.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 4,021 people, 1,619 households, and 1,143 families residing in the township.

There were 2,778 housing units at an average density of 71.7 per square mile (27.7/km2).

The racial makeup of the township was 97.56% White, 0.15% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races.

25.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
