It is a main teaching hospital for both preclinical and clinical training of most disciplines in the School of Medicine of Addis Ababa University.

It offers specialized clinical service that is no compiled with both the public and private medical institutions in Ethiopia.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is the main department of the hospital founded on 25 September 1987 as the leading orthopedic center in the country.

The decision is to seek autonomy from the federal government and establish its own financial assets.
