The station, initially consisting of two platforms, was opened in November 1858 by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway.
[citation needed] Electric trains, the first in Kent, began running on the Southern Railway's third rail system between London, Bromley South and Orpington in July 1925.
[citation needed] The last passenger steam trains to serve Bromley South did so in 1959, when lines to the Kent Coast were third rail electrified.
[citation needed] Services at Bromley South are operated by Southeastern and Thameslink using Class 375, 377, 465, 466 and 700 EMUs.
In addition, the service to London Blackfriars is extended to and from Welwyn Garden City via Finsbury Park.
