Chan made her Olympic debut, as Hong Kong's youngest swimmer (aged 13), at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where she competed in the women's 200 m butterfly.
[3][4] At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Chan qualified again for the 200 m butterfly, by posting a FINA B-cut of 2:16.49 from the Hong Kong Championships in Kowloon.
[5][6] She challenged seven other swimmers on the same heat as Sydney, including 15-year-old Maria Bulakhova of Russia.
She raced to fourth place by three tenths of a second (0.30) behind Slovenia's Anja Klinar in 2:18.45.
Chan failed to advance into the semifinals, as she placed twenty-ninth overall in the prelims.
