[3] It is a marine, deep-water dwelling eel which is known from Cape Peninsula, South Africa, in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean.

[2] Coloconger eximia has one of the largest known fish larvae, growing to at least 70 cm (27.5 in).

[4] Their leptocephalus larvae are elongate, with a long, straight gut, a dorsal fin that originates in the latter half of the body, well-developed pectoral fins, and a long head.
