Emily Chew

She began her career as an ophthalmologist while studying under Brenda Gallie, M.D., a retinoblastoma expert at the University of Toronto.

From 1983 to 1986, Chew was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto.

In 1987, she joined the Clinical Trials Branch of the NIH's National Eye Institute.

Chew's work includes data analysis from the Early Treatment Diabetic retinopathy Study (ETDRS) and management and data analysis from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS).

That study established that daily high doses of certain Antioxidants and Minerals called the AREDS formulation can help slow the progression to advanced AMD.

Dr. Emily Chew of the National Eye Institute (NEI) conducts a thorough eye exam on her patient, Charles R. Tansil.
