Gainesville is an incorporated town in Wyoming County, New York.
The Town of Gainesville is the birthplace of David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University; as well as Ella Hawley Crossett, prominent activist in the women's suffrage movement.
The soils are deep and fertile, though somewhat rolling and rocky, as they were left by the last continental ice sheet.
As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 2,333 people, 873 households, and 644 families residing in the town.
21.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
