Georg Gerland

Georg Cornelius Karl Gerland (29 January 1833, in Kassel – 16 February 1919, in Strasbourg) was a German anthropologist and geophysicist.

He studied classical philology, Germanistics and anthropology at the universities of Berlin and Marburg.

[1] From 1856 to 1875 he successively worked as a gymnasium teacher in Kassel, Hanau, Magdeburg and Halle an der Saale, and in 1875 was named a professor of ethnology and geography at the University of Strasbourg.

In 1900 he became director of the Imperial Central Bureau for Earthquake Research in Strasbourg.

[2] Gerland presented ideas of Germal seismologist Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz at the sixth International Geographic Conference in London in 1895, and organized the first International Conference of Seismology in Strasbourg in 1901.
