Gilpin County is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

At the 2000 census there were 4,757 people, 2,043 households, and 1,264 families in the county.

The racial makeup of the county was 94.37% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 1.53% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races.

[10] Of the 2,043 households 26.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% were married couples living together, 5.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.10% were non-families.

Males had a median income of $38,560 versus $30,820 for females.
