[4] According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Haluaghat Upazila had 69,725 households and a population of 290,043.
Haluaghat has a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 38.89%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 1034 females per 1000 males.
Ethnic communities in Haluaghat are: Garo, Hajong, Koch, Dalu, Bangshi Barman, Khatrio, Kurmi and Mal, although vast majority (over 96%) are Garo.
