The mountain area partially overlaps the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, and is defined by the villages of Røldal to the west and Haukeli in the east.
[1] The mountain pass was opened in 1886 and is part of the European route E134.
European route E134 over Haukelifjell is the most important transport link between Haugesund and Oslo.
In the winter, column driving through the mountain pass and occasionally closed roads is not uncommon, due to a lot of snow and heavy winds.
[2] Haukelifjell Ski Resort[3] and Haukeliseter Fjellstue Hostel (Norwegian Trekking Association)[4] are in the mountain area.
