John Hampden Chamberlayne

John Hampden Chamberlayne (June 2, 1838 – February 18, 1882) was an American politician and newspaper publisher from Virginia.

John Hampden Chamberlayne was born on June 2, 1838, in Richmond, Virginia, to Lewis W.

[2][3] On April 17, 1861, Chamberlayne volunteered for the Confederate Army as a private in Company F of the 21st Virginia Infantry Regiment.

This led to a physical and nervous breakdown in the spring of 1867 that left him incapacitated for a year.

[3][6] In May 1868, he worked a clerical position with the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad in Central Depot (now Radford).

[5] Chamberlayne died of pneumonia on February 18, 1882, at his home on Grace Street in Richmond.

[2][1] His son Churchill published Chamberlayne's Civil War letters in a book titled "Ham Chamberlayne-Virginian" in 1932.
